For many, the choice is habitual rather than deliberate—a brand selected years ago for reasons that may no longer apply, or a product chosen because it was on special.
A Policy Conversation That Belongs in the Aisle
The disconnect between Queensland's public health investment in water fluoridation and the consumer choices playing out in supermarket aisles every day represents a genuine policy communication challenge. Bottled waters that contain fluoride at levels consistent with Queensland's target range can serve as a reasonable supplement in circumstances where tap water is not accessible.
What the experts caution against is the unexamined assumption that bottled water is inherently superior to what comes from the tap—a belief that the bottled water industry's marketing has done considerable work to cultivate, and that the science of water fluoridation consistently fails to support.
